The Ellen MacArthur Foundation foundation announced on Wednesday that brands like Nike, H&M, Burberry and Gap will join its Make Fashion Circular plan to reduce waste in the global fashion industry by recycling raw materials and products.

The Make Fashion Circular initiative was first presented at the Copenhagen fashion summit in May 2017, when the name Circular Fibres Initiative was supported by the C&A foundation and the WAL-MART foundation.

The renamed Make Fashion Circular has 16 stakeholders, including city authorities, fashion manufacturers, designers and brands.

Participants in the Make Fashion Circular initiative need to adhere to three key principles:

Using renewable and safe materials

We are committed to creating new solutions for the recycling of old garments.

"The output of garments has doubled in the past 15 years, but we have been wearing them down a lot," says Francois Souchet, director of the Make Fashion Circular program.

We can reduce waste of clothing through better design, new leasing and resale business models. "

The four brands will work with British designer Stella McCartney to eliminate waste and pollution and ensure that products and materials are reused.

Stella McCartney is the first designer to sign the agreement last year.

McCartney said that the waste in the fashion industry is very serious, and has a negative impact on the environment. It also appealed to other brands to sign the agreement.

In a report issued in November, the foundation announced the seriousness of waste and pollution in the fashion industry, noting that less than one percent of clothing was recycled.

500 thousand tons of microfiber are emitted annually to the global ocean, equivalent to 50 billion plastic bottles.

According to the foundation, the brand will take three years to work with HSBC to study how to avoid polluting materials and improve processes in the whole industry.

"No company can pform the whole industry into a sustainable business model, so we must cooperate," said H&M spokeswoman I n Igo S enz Maestre.

He said: "H&M plans to use all recyclable materials or other sustainable development materials in the whole production process before 2030. At present, we have 35% of them.
