In the Gates Foundation's Discovery Center, we found a long, shawl like wide cloth strip, and such a card:

Kangaroo Wrap is a technology for wrapping the skin of newborn babies with their mothers (or fathers).

In the picture of the card, with curiosity and rush to bind a plastic water bag doll full of simulated newborn weights to the body and take photos, in the rural areas of Ethiopia, Malawi and democratic Congo, a considerable number of new mothers are wrapped up in the same way by the help of the local midwives, wrapped in the mother's arms and the mother's body temperature is maintained.

This kangaroo bag can save many premature babies.

From the beginning of the last century to the end of the last century, with the help of modern medical technology, the mortality rate of neonates dropped from nearly 10% to less than 0.8%.

Today, however, 2 million 600 thousand new babies are unable to survive the first month of life in the world. Most of them happen in underdeveloped areas.

Premature birth is one of the greatest threats to these small lives.

Records of preterm birth in developed areas are constantly being refreshed with the support of increasingly sophisticated medical equipment and sterile care. However, these high technologies can not benefit remote areas.

In rural areas of sub Saharan Africa, there is a lack of health infrastructure, and nearly 1/3 of births are carried out at home.

Premature babies do not have the care of incubators. They are very easy to die. It is a long bumpy ride to nearby hospitals.

What they need is a simple, low-cost technology that supports medical evidence and greatly improves survival.

So kangaroo bags were born.

This method of neonatal care was first introduced in Columbia, and was noticed by the medical profession and NGO in the 90s of last century. The WHO subsequently incorporated it into routine care.

It is not as tight as the usual infancy, leaving room for infant activity and breathing.

The belt that bypasses adult's shoulders can provide support for infants with incomplete neck development.

And tightly cling to the skin of adults can keep the baby warm and allow the mother or father to free their hands.

The most critical point is that its cost is very low and it is very convenient to popularize.

The local midwives can quickly learn this technology with the help of NGO volunteers and apply them to neonates who are less than a month old.

A 2016 study showed that the use of kangaroo bags reduced the death rate of low birth weight newborns (less than 2kg at birth) by 40% - a remarkable achievement.

In many cases, the needs of locals are not just passive use.

When the founder of Sustainable Health Enterprises (Elizabeth Scharpf) came to Rwanda's village, she found that nearly 20% of the girls in the area could not get health products during menstruation, averaging 35 days a year.

Despite the fact that NGO has donated sanitary napkins, the girls have fallen into the predicament after they are used up. They are shy of talking about it and do not know how to continue to make demands and continue to be trapped in their homes once a month.

Shako came from Harvard University School of business and Kennedy Administration School of management. She was young and entrepreneurial, and charitable. But with these dazzling titles, she also put herself in the "inventor" perspective to reflect on people's needs.

With a small design team, she went deep into the countryside to look for ways to make local ginseng come in. That is, relying on the local banana resources, drying and chopping the fibers from banana leaves into water absorbing materials, producing a convenient and powerful local sanitary napkin.

In the local factory where the team invested and directed, a large number of local women were also involved in the manufacture, sale and distribution. During this process, the girls began to discuss the original taboo topic of menstruation with adults.

Little invention has brought more differences to the world.

Changing the world, spinning can also be done.
